South Hillsborough Library
By reading 15 great books this year, South students in grades 4 and 5 can win the right to have a “sleepover” in the library, including a pizza and ice cream party and the privilege of watching a movie based on a children’s book. Winners will also be recognized school-wide at the end of the year where they will receive a special t-shirt recognizing their accomplishment. Students have until Friday, April 27, 2018 to complete the Reading Challenge, and the evening celebration will be on Thursday, May 10, 2018.
It’s easy! Students read any combination of fiction and nonfiction books to get up to 15 books, but they must read at least one fiction and one nonfiction book. When selecting fiction books to read, students may choose from a list of fiction titles that have quotes (listed below) or may ask Mrs. James to read a book of their choice. After finishing a fiction book from the list with quotes, students have a choice. They may 1) identify the correct quote for the book, 2) write a detailed one-page summary of the book, OR 3) create a bookmark for the book. If students would like to read a fiction book that is not on the list, they need to see Mrs. James for approval. If the book is approved, students may write a summary or create a bookmark for the approved book. For nonfiction books, students have the choice of writing a detailed one-page summary of the book or creating a bookmark for the book (there are no quotes that they may identify).
The correctly identified quote, paragraphs, or bookmarks should be turned in to the library throughout the year. Mrs. James creates individual student folders for all students who are participating. Students who read 22 books and complete all the summaries and/or bookmarks will be treated to a “lunch out” with Mrs. James in addition to the library “sleepover.” Enjoy the stories!
