South Hillsborough Library
By reading 16 great books this year, a combination of picture books, chapter books, and nonfiction books, third grade South students can win the right to have a “sleepover” in the library, including a pizza and ice cream party and a literature-related movie on Thursday, May 10, 2018. Winners will also be recognized school-wide at the end of the year, and they will receive a special t-shirt recognizing their accomplishment.
Please note: Due to the increasing popularity of the Reading Challenge, there will be a $15.00 donation to cover the cost of the t-shirt.
It’s easy. Third graders get to choose ten picture books from the K through 2nd grade book list and six fiction or nonfiction books from the grades 4 through 5 book lists (the combination of books can vary, but there must be at least one fiction and one nonfiction book). For each picture book, the third grade student needs to identify which quote came from the book and which character said the line. It is possible that some quotations are remarks or thoughts of the narrator of the story; if so, a student should just write “narrator” for the name of the character who said the line. For the fiction and nonfiction books from the grades 4th through 5th grade lists, students may identify the quote for the fiction books, write a detailed one-page summary of the book, OR create a bookmark for the book.
Students have until April 27, 2018 to read all 16 books.
The answers to the quotes, bookmarks, or summaries should be turned in to the library. Winners will be announced during the second week in May. Enjoy the stories!
