From March 19th through 23rd, I will be showing the movie “Hugo” to the third grade members of the Reading Tigers. “Hugo” was directed by Martin Scorsese. It stars Ben Kingsley, Sacha Baron Cohen, Chloe Moretz, and Jude Law. Students will come directly from class at noon to the library with their lunch. Following each day’s viewing, I plan to have a brief discussion of the similarities and differences between the book and the movie. We’ll touch on themes of director vs. author vision, how actors bring a character to life, and how director Martin Scorsese recreated Paris as imagined by author Brian Selznick. This is a PG movie (for mild thematic material, some action, peril, and smoking), so I will need a permission slip from each parent if you would like your third grade Reading Tiger to attend. Please fill out the permission slip attached below. I think children will have a wonderful time comparing the book to the movie. To see a preview of the movie, click on the YouTube link below.
Please send me an email, sally@james5.com, or stop by to see me in the library if you have any questions.
Permission Slip to View “Hugo”
I give permission for my son/daughter ______________________ to watch the movie “Hugo” in the library at South School during lunchtime of the week of March 19th through March 23rd. I understand that the movie is a PG movie and that the students will be comparing/contrasting the movie to the book they have already read.
